Stylised depictions of dogs, scorpions or shrimps were the most common motifs among the Kayan, Iban but also the Kenyah. These are the names the inhabitants gave to the motifs; the animals themselves have been so stylised that they are barely recognisable. The dog motif (udoh asu) was especially popular. Men would collect them on their arms and chest during their travels, the lines forming the motifs indicating the tribes they visited. The dog motif evolved into a scorpion (kala) or a scorpion-dog (kala asu) among the Iban, and into a shrimp among the Kenyah.
